Lewis Nickell

Lewis Jones Nickell, the son of Albert and Lulu (Jones) Nickell, was born on April 8, 1923, in Lineville, Iowa, where he was raised and educated, graduating from Lineville High School in 1942. He served throughout Europe during WWII in the United States Army from September 1942 to October 1945, receiving many medals including a purple heart.

On May 27, 1951, Lewis was united in marriage with Janice Peterson at the Open Bible Church in Eagle Grove. The couple lived on a farm east of Eagle Grove and then moved into town in 1954.

Lewis farmed until 1955 then he worked at Boone Valley/Farmland feed mill until 1986.

Lewis enjoyed woodworking, reading and playing chess, checkers and Skip-Bo.

Lewis was a longtime member of the Open Bible Church and attended Park Church of Christ in Goldfield.

Lewis passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove, at the age of 101 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice; infant son, Michael David; and siblings: Peggy, Earl, Calvin, A.C., Gib, Esther, Pauline, Iola and Paul.

Survivors include his daughters: Becky and Allen Porter of Mesquite, NV, Vicky and Stephen Adams of Goldfield and Cheryl and Richard Jacobsen of Muscatine; son-in-law, Gene Van Grevenhof of Fort Dodge; five grandchildren: Jessica Burmeister Chris Adams, Shane Adams, Nicole Jacobsen and Tricia Jacobsen; nine great-grandchildren; seven great great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Norma Nickell of Clarion.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, August 19, 2024, at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Visitation was Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. The burial with military honors was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
