The food retailer Fareway has donated $100,000 to Des Moines Area Community College for its new Transportation Institute, which is now under construction.

As previously reported in the Iowa Capital Dispatch, the $9 million project includes the construction of a new education facility that will include classrooms, garages and individual and group study areas. The number of concourses for training will double from three to six, and new parking, exits and entrances, and an outdoor canopy will be added to the site north of Des Moines.

These renovations will allow the institution’s capacity to swell from 250 to 500 students, DMACC Director of Industry and Technology Megan Ellsworth said at the groundbreaking, and allow the college to partner with companies for training.

When construction crews broke ground in November, the project was about one-third of the way funded through grants and gifts, from both the state and private donors. According to a news release, the project will be completed in 2025.
