Doug Miller
Doug Miller, 75, of Hampton passed away May 11, 2022 at the Muse Norris Hospice House in Mason City with loved ones by his side. A private family service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton.
Douglas Michael Miller was born March 1, 1947 in Webster City, IA to Durwood and Harriett (Pat) Miller. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1965 and obtained an associate’s degree from Iowa Central Community College in 1967. After college, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served one tour in Vietnam.
Doug owned and operated Miller Concrete for over 40 years. His interest in trees and dream of having a tree farm came true in 1981 when Doug started Miller Tree Farm. On July 26, 1988 he was united in marriage with Cynthia (Stolen) Sutter.
He valued family, friends, and hard work above everything. He enjoyed working on the tree farm, and spent countless hours trimming and maintaining acres of Christmas trees every summer so he could see and share in the joy they brought to so many families at Christmas time. Doug was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan, but there wasn’t a baseball, basketball or NASCAR race he didn’t enjoy watching. When not watching sports, you could bet there was a “cowboy show” playing on the TV. But above all, Doug’s favorite place to be was at his cabin on Kid Lake near Hackensack, MN. He loved to fish and catch crappies but teaching others how to fish and pointing out all the “secret” crappie spots brought him the most joy. When not in the boat he could be found sitting in the swing watching the lake and just enjoying cabin life Up North. Taking his daily evening cruise around the back roads of Hackensack visiting with and checking in on friends.
Doug’s pride and joy in life were his grandchildren. From attending their sporting events, to teaching them to hunt, fish, and trim trees. He spent weeks each summer with them at the cabin from the time they were very young, sharing his love of the lake and “Up North”. Not to mention the many jeep rides, and times spent selling Christmas trees. The times spent with his grandchildren always brought a big smile to his face and a sense of pride that everyone could see.
Doug is survived by his wife Cyndi of Hampton, children: Aaron Miller of Hampton, Andrew (Evie) Sutter of Backus, MN, Brian (Lynn Alcott) Sutter of Hampton, Michael (Kacey) Sutter of Adel, IA, 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandsons, and sister Valerie (Larry) Naumann of Oklahoma along with nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father in-law, and his son Cory Miller.
