Robert “Toby” Jean Crandall
Robert “Toby” Jean Crandall, the son of Luther and Naomi (Gage) Crandall, was born on November 24, 1930, at Wadena, IA. He graduated from Wadena High School in 1948 and attended Iowa Central Community College where he received his AA Degree in Accounting.
On May 15, 1954, Toby was united in marriage with Vivian Olson in Chillicothe, Missouri. While Toby served in the United States Marine Corps from 1948 – 1970 reaching the rank of Captain, the couple made their home in a number of cities and states, including California, Colorado, South Carolina, and Florida. They returned to Iowa in 1970, living in Webster City and moving back to Eagle Grove in 1978.
After Toby’s military career, he worked for Nissen Meat Packing and Cliff Rogers Trucking, owned and operated Crandall Cappers and retired for a second time, from the United States Postal Service – where he was a mail carrier and sorter. He was a member of Samuel Lutheran Church and served on church council, Wadena American Legion and Bower Lodge #464 in Eagle Grove and the Marine Corps League in Fort Dodge. Toby loved to golf and was a member of Eagle Grove Golf Course and Pass Christian Isle’s Country Club and spent many years attending and some years organizing the Marine Corp Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament.
Toby passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, at the age of 90 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vivian in 2011; sister, Marjorie Marie; brothers, Paul (Annella), Jim and Max Crandall and a grandson, Alec Lawson.
Survivors include his son, Mike Crandall (Freda Weiss) of Lillian, AL and Elizabeth, IL; daughter, Susie (Marty) Elberg of Hollywood, FL; two grandsons, Kaleb (Holly) Lawson of Adel and Taylor Elberg of Miami, FL; great-grandson, Finn Lawson and sisters-in-law, Marge Crandall of Marshalltown and Mildred Lofgreen of Salt Lake City, UT.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove with Pastor Don Bell officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a Masonic service at 3:30 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial with Military Honors will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, followed by a gathering in honor of Toby at the Eagle Grove Golf Course.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Hospital, Samuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
