Jerry Spangler

Jerry Lee Spangler passed away peacefully on August 8th, 2022 in Glendale, Arizona. Jerry’s 3 children were at his bedside. 

Jerry was born August 21,1934 in Eagle Grove, IA to Charles Emery Spangler and Thelma Helen (Hall) Spangler. He grew up in rural Eagle Grove, and attended country school, followed by the Eagle Grove High School. In his youth, he raised and showed hogs. In 1952 he was awarded Winner of Champion Barrow at the I.S.F., by Iowa Duroc Breeders.

On May 2, 1954 Jerry was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Roseland also of Eagle Grove. They made their home on the farm in rural Eagle Grove, where Jerry farmed on the family farm with his dad.

Later they moved to town and Jerry worked for Giesse Construction & started driving for Umthun Trucking Co. in 1960. 

In 1972 the family moved to Arizona, where Jerry worked for A.J. Bayless as a supervisor in the Warehouse, and worked for Mckelvey Trucking until he retired in 2002. 

Once retired they moved to Twin Lake, Iowa as Jerry loved to fish. In 2008 they moved back to Arizona to spend time with their 5 grandchildren. Jerry and Shirley celebrated their 60th Anniversary in May 2014. 

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley Spangler, his sons in law Tom Vermillion and Danny Valdivia, and his brother Dennis Spangler.

He is survived by his three children: Colleen Vermillion, Janis Schrutt and Mark Spangler; his five grandchildren Tyler (Kristen) Schrutt, Tara (Kier) Schrutt Ladd, Nathan, Paige, and Jarred Spangler; as well as four great-grandchildren, Rylee and Landon Schrutt and Madison and Maddox Ladd. All of Arizona. He is also survived by his Sisters in law Ellen McCurry of Eagle Grove, and Marvlyn Spangler of Fremont, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews. 

On August 21st the family chose to have a private Celebration of Jerry’s Life and to celebrate his Birthday as he would have turned 88, on that day.
