Gordon Thompson

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Renwick. Visitation will be 4–7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at the church.

Gordon Duane Thompson, son of Thealburn Numen and Dorothy Jeanette (Midland) Thompson, was born June 5, 1957, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Cresco, Iowa. He attended grade school in Ridgeway, Iowa before the family relocated to Renwick, Iowa when Gordy was in the third grade. Gordy then attended school at Boone Valley, graduating in 1975. He studied at Iowa State University for a winter quarter before finding employment in Renwick. Gordy was married to Michelle Basler February 18, 1978, at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, Iowa. The couple made and still have their home in Renwick. Gordy worked at Renwick Motors, and at Hardy Cooperative Elevator before venturing into a construction business, Quality Construction, in 1999. In a change of careers Gordy then became the owner/operator of GDT, Inc. trucking company. He was most recently employed with M S & Sons Corp. as a driver. Gordy was a hard worker and dedicated employee. Gordy was an active and involved member of his community. He volunteered for the Renwick Fire Department and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Renwick. Gordy was a man of strong faith and was a devoted leader of the church. He served as a Luther League sponsor, a member of the church council, and taught confirmation classes. He was a proud American citizen who loved his country and his community. He treated everyone with respect and kindness, only asking for it in return. Gordy loved a good Western movie and shared in an appreciation of cultural events with Michelle. Gordy was never short on words and his humor, sharp wit, and hearty laugh were always appreciated by his closest friends. Gordy exuded pride in the accomplishments of his children, and his grandchildren provided him with immense joy. Family was most important to Gordy and he considered many of his friends to be part of that family.

Gordon passed from this life at the age of 64, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is survived by his loving wife Michelle Thompson of Renwick, with whom he shared almost 44 years of marriage; daughter Taylor Thompson of Des Moines; son Tanner (Heather) of Wooster, Ohio; grandchildren Elle Teryn and Emmett Gordon Thompson; sisters: Sybil (Jerry) Kintz of Alexandria, Virginia, Phyllis Thompson of Eden Prairie, MN, Janet Thompson of Waterloo, and Kathy (Gary) Martin of Salida, Colorado; brothers Bill Thompson of Renwick (special friend Shelley Davis of Humboldt), and Tod (Pam) Thompson of Purcellville, Virginia; mother-in-law Janice Basler of Humboldt; brother-in-law Mark (Naomi) Basler of Redondo Beach, California; his aunt JeNell Hilleman of State Center; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a plethora of friends. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, stepmom Lorietta Thompson, father-in-law Gary Basler, and brother-in-law Paul Tenney.
