Carroll L. Vorrie

Carroll L. Vorrie, 93, of Fort Dodge, formerly of Thor, passed away at Friendship Haven on December 12, 2020. Visitation is Wednesday, Dec. 16 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove – Masks are required. The services will be for the family only. Burial with Military Honors will be in Blossom Hill Cemetery, Badger.

Carroll Lorelle Vorrie, the son of John and Ida (Sheldon) Vorrie, was born on August 7, 1927, on a family farm near Thor, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor. He attended country school, Norway No. 9 in Humboldt County and Eagle Grove High School. In 1945, at the age of 17, Carroll enlisted in the United States Navy Medical Corp, during W.W. II. At the time of his honorable discharge, he served as a Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC. In 1947, Carroll returned home and completed his senior year at Eagle Grove High School. He then started farming a family farm north of Thor.

On September 5, 1948, Carroll was united in marriage with Betty Bradley, at the Badger Lutheran Church. They made their home on the family farm north of Thor. In 1955, they moved to their Century Farm south of Thor. In 1971, sons Dennis and Duane joined him in farming. In 1988, after 40 years of farming, Carroll and Betty moved to Fort Dodge, bur he always enjoyed helping on the farm after retiring.

Carroll was a life-long member of Ullensvang Lutheran Church, where he served on several church boards. He was also a member of Adams American Legion Post 119 for 50 plus years and the Sons of Norway.

Carroll enjoyed fishing trips to northern Minnesota and Canada and the many bus trips and travels to the Scandinavian Countries, Alaska, Hawaii, and Mexico, he and Betty took. He was a regular for coffee with his group at Hy Vee and enjoyed playing cards. Carroll cherished his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful man who gave so much of himself to others without ever expecting anything in return. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Betty; sons, Dennis Vorrie (Sallie) of Fort Dodge and Duane Vorrie (Deanna) of Humboldt; daughter, Diane Schmid (Roger) of Kingsley; eleven grandchildren: Derek Vorrie (Melissa), Nate, Sam, and Hannah Vorrie, Chris Vorrie (Kelsey), Brad Vorrie (Lindy), Adam Vorrie (fiancée` Madalyn Loring), Jordan and Tyler Vorrie, Brandon Schmid (Katie) and Ryan Schmid (fiancée` Liz Addee); seven great-grandchildren: Peyton, Zoey, Elin, Macy, Lucy, Reagan and Declan; sisters-in-law, Isabel Vorrie and Betty A. Vorrie and nephews, James Young and Eric Vorrie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Everett and Norbert Vorrie; sister, Francis Young and brother-in-law, Jim Young.
