Angeline Spangler
Angeline Spangler of Eagle Grove passed away on 14 July 2021 at Rotary Senior Living in the care of St. Croix Hospice at the age of 89. Angie was born in 1932 to Frederick and Carrie (Harden) Felbauer in Otho, Iowa. She was raised in the Otho area and graduated from Otho High School in 1950. After high school, Angie worked at the Boston Store in Fort Dodge in the bookkeeping department. While living in Fort Dodge, she met her future husband, Jack Spangler, on a street corner outside the "Top Hat". It was love at first sight, and the two were nearly inseparable until Jack was called by Uncle Sam to fight in the Korean War. He came home in early 1953, and they were married in June of that year. Correspondence between the two at the time indicated that perhaps he was not as speedy in issuing a proposal as she might have liked. In the end, they
were devoted to each other for more than 67 years. They lived in Eagle Grove all their married lives.
In addition to raising their three children, which in and of itself was a mighty task, Angie worked at M&M, the Eagle Grove Community Schools, the Eagle Grove Eagle, and Wright County Opportunities, and some other places that we've undoubtedly overlooked. When she wasn't employed off the farm, she spent much of her adult life supporting the operations of the Spangler farm. She could kill a chicken, pluck it, clean it and have it roasting in the oven later that day. While her cooking didn't rival that of Julia Child, she always managed to cook for an army. When the kids were around, there was often a big pot of chili on the stove on Friday nights (except during Lent when there was fish) to feed whoever wandered in the door. No one went hungry.
Her children swear that Angie had eyes in the back of her head. She always knew what was going on behind her, and often took pre-emptive measures to avoid mayhem. Her intricate network of 'mom' spies within the Eagle Grove city limits reported to her on the whereabouts and activities of her children. There was nothing that missed her attention. The CIA and FBI could have used her intelligence gathering talents.
Once Jack retired from active farming, Angie and he enjoyed sitting on their front porch during good weather watching the world go by. They spent their afternoons with car rides around the area. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends, children and grandchildren. Angie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove.
As she entered the last few years of her life, Angie began the long, heart-breaking physical and mental decline inflicted by dementia. That nasty disease dared to take much of our loving mother and grandmother from us some months ago. The staff at Rotary Senior Living and St. Croix Hospice did a wonderful job of caring for Angie. We are comforted in knowing that Angie Spangler knows who Angie Spangler is again.
Angie is survived by her children, Kim (Pam) of Eagle Grove, Kelly (Vernon Limerick) of Eagle Grove, and Nancy (Edwin Martin) of Charlottesville, Virginia; four grandchildren, Michael (Amber) of Farnhamville, Matthew (Katie) of Ankeny, Marcus and his significant other, Kandace Sorensen of Eagle Grove, and Katherine Spangler Martin of Charlottesville; and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She loved her cat, Miss Kitty, who also survives her. Angie was preceded in death by Jack, her parents, her two sisters, and a great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at Foust Funeral Home, Eagle Grove on Wednesday July 21, 2021, 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to service time. Expressions of sympathy can be sent to the family at 38 Spruce Drive, Eagle Grove, Iowa 50533. Memorials will be left to the discretion of the family. www.foustfh.com
