Wright County Veterans aboard Honor Flight share their thoughts

As Americans celebrated Memorial Day this past weekend, there were three area Vietnam Veterans who had a lot to reflect upon, and a lot to be grateful for. Their service to our country during a very difficult time was recently recognized as they finally got the appreciation they deserved on May 12, 2018.

That’s when they were given the opportunity to be part of the Brushy Creek Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Salvador Calderon of Eagle Grove served as part of the Army 31st Combat Engineers in Vietnam. He was drafted in 1968 and served 15 months. He still remembers what he was thinking when he got that letter.

“I figured well, they’re gonna send me to Vietnam so I better learn what they’re going to teach me.”

When he heard about the Honor Flights, he was excited to go. He was signed up and ready to go last year, but an accident prevented him from taking the trip he had so anticipated.

So when he took this trip of a lifetime just a couple of weeks ago, he soaked in every moment.
