Wachowiak named to All- State Band for second year

Eagle Grove High School senior, Maggie Wachowiak, has once again been selected to perform as part of the prestigious Iowa All-State Band this November.

As a flutist who has been perfecting her craft for eight years, Wachowiak is honored to have this opportunity for the second year in a row. To earn a spot in the 276-piece band, Wachowiak had to prepare two solo Études (small technical numbers), and memorize every major scale. The scales weren’t so much a problem as she had them prepared for last year’s audition, but she did need to spend some time refreshing her fluency of the scales as you are never sure which scales they will ask you to play the day of the audition.

Being a part of the Iowa All State Band last year as a Junior gave Wachowiak a little bit more reassurance auditioning again this year as a senior because she knew a little bit what to expect, but that didn’t stop her from practicing for hours...and it didn’t completely get rid of all her nerves. But once again, practice made perfect and Wachowiak earned a seat in the instrumental ensemble. Wachowiak auditioned at the Hampton site, but in all, only an estimated 17 percent of the total musicians from all of the audition sites (Storm Lake, Hampton, Independence, Atlantic, Indianola, and Washington) are selected to be part of the All-State Band.
