Two local student graduating from high school and college in the same month

Two Eagle Grove High School seniors, Mariana Gonzalez and Chloe Knigge, will walk through college commencement before they even receive their high school diplomas on May 19, 2019.

Both Gonzalez and Knigge set out on the path of higher education as sophomores in high school. Gonzalez took Intro to Business as a Flexnet class at Eagle Grove High School and Knigge took Intro to Psychology, earning them both dual credits for high school and college classes. It was last year, though, as juniors that they really started accumulating college credits while still in high school. They both signed up to be students at the North Central Career Academy in Eagle Grove, attending classes at the site from 8:20 – 11:10 a.m. Monday through Friday, then returning back to the high school to complete afternoon classes there.

Both girls studied the business strand, completing the coursework at the end of the year. When they returned to the Career Academy this past fall as seniors, they both took classes in the Liberal Arts strand. At the completion of the term, both girls will have accumulated more than 40 credits, enough to graduate from the Career Academy of Iowa Central Community College.

When it was suggested to them that they walk through commencement ceremonies, it was something Gonazalez wanted to do right away, but not without her friend who was by her side every step of the way.
