Triton Network - 21st Century education at work in Eagle Grove

Did your parents ever say to you, “Things have changed so much since I was your age?” If you’ve been out of school for even 10 years now, chances are, you’re thinking the same thing now, too.

Back in the day, when Iowa Central Community College was offering classes at what is now the Eagle Grove Area Community School District Administration Building, there were a few classes with teachers on-site, and a few that offered off-site teachers that showed up over a screen. Admittedly, although it was a nice option to offer more classes in our small community, it left a lot to be desired. Although it was considered “top technology” in the 1980s, teachers could only see exactly where the camera was pointed, which was the same spot throughout the class. In order to talk to a teacher, students had to pass old stand-up microphones back and forth and hit a button to talk. Even then, by the time the student got the microphone, and if it actually worked, the teacher had often times gone on to the next area of the lesson or was answering an on-site students questions.
