Three move on to State Wrestling

For the second year in a row, the Eagle Grove wrestling team will be represented by three competitors at this week’s state tournament. Following district action in Lake Mills, Gabe Rolon (120), Mark Dawson (145) and Joel Mendoza (220) will all make up the 1A fi eld at the 8-mat extravaganza. Dawson and Mendoza will make their second appearance in Des Moines, with Rolon a fi rst-time participant.

Mendoza goes in as a fi rst place fi nisher, with both Dawson and Rolon as runnersup. Mendoza pinned Hagen (W. Hancock) in 5:56 to start his day, then did the same in 4:17 to Steelman (GT-RA). Dawson won by fall in 5:26 over Garl (C. Springs) in his fi rst match, but then lost to Griffi n (Emmetsburg) 10-8. Since he had already beaten Garl, no wrestleback match was needed.

Rolon won by fall in 5:22 over Mathers (C. Springs) to open his day, then lost 8-7 to Gallardo (L. Mills). Since he had already beaten Mathers, he avoided a wrestleback match.
