Third branch of EG family tree keeps Twiins Shoppe growing strong

Twiins Shoppe has been a mainstay of the Eagle Grove community for decades. It was first built as Brian’s Hamburger and Malt Shop in 1971 (owned by Clarence Buhner), and then changed to Stro-Jo’s in 1976 when Maynard Dearch purchased it, and finally became the Twiins Shoppe that we all know and love when another owner with twin children took over.

“It’s been here ever since I was a kid,” said Mike Hackbarth.

But all those times in that malt shop while growing up, Hackbarth couldn’t have guessed that he would one day own it himself.

It all started in 1992 when his parents, Ellen and Dave Hackbarth, purchased the restaurant. They kept the name the same because, ironically, there were twins in their family as well...twin granddaughters who are now in the eight grade. Ellen could be found at Twiins, happily serving her customers day-in and day-out. She greeted everyone with a smile on her face and was proud to serve them a hot home-cooked meal, a burger and fries, or a delicious ice cream treat.

After many years, Ellen sold the shop to her daughter, Bobbi Jo, who was proud to be the second-generation owner. On September 1, 2017, Mike and his wife, Mindy, became the third generation owners.

“We thought about changing the name to Ellen’s Diner, after Mom, but it’s been Twiins forever so we’re leaving it,” Mike said.
