A story of stained glass—update

In the December 22 editions of the Wright County Monitor and Eagle Grove Eagle, we printed an article called “A Story of Stained Glass.” The article described the history of the beautiful stained glass windows at Goldfield United Presbyterian Church and how some of them originated in England in the 1500s, and some of them were created by the famous American artisan Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Shortly after the article was published, Barbara Krueger with the Michigan Stained Glass Census wrote an email to us. She was quite certain that the windows pictured were not Tiffany windows, and that the windows described as Canterbury windows were also American in origin. This prompted an investigation which led us to Willet Hauser, a reputable stained glass company which did the analysis on the church’s windows in 2013.

Patrick Jensen, who covers the Midwest for Willet Hauser, said the discovery of a Tiffany window in Goldfield United Presbyterian would definitely have been noted in their company’s report. “In the last three years—and I’m in probably 400 churches a year—I’ve seen two Tiffany windows,” Jensen said. “Tiffany windows stick out like a sore thumb.”
