A song in his heart and the melody at his finger tips

“How Great Thou Art” is a song that Ray Loux has played on the organ many times. It’s a favorite of his, and in fact, he wrote his own arrangement of it that he often played by request. Now, at the age of 93 (94 on December 14), how great it is for Ray to share his story of sharing his love of music and the 69 years he spent as the church organist.

“I think that’s almost a record,” Ray laughed of his nearly seven decades as part of the music ministry at the French Church, and later, St. Peter’s Church in Woolstock.

His passion for playing all began around the age of 17.

“You wouldn’t believe it, but that teacher would come around for only $.50 a lesson. My mother said I took about 17 lessons,” Ray recalled.
