"Sew" many opportunities

Have you ever watched a child try something new? They just go for it. They don’t hold back. If it doesn’t work the first time, they try it again. Perhaps that’s because they have no fear. Their mind-set hasn’t yet developed to a process of thinking “What if I do it wrong?” or “What if it doesn’t work?” Whether it’s learning to ride a bike, use an iPad, or even speak a second language.

The same holds true when it comes to learning a new hobby, like sewing. Decades ago, most women sewed in some form or another. Today, there are far fewer individuals who can do much more than sew on a button. Why is that? Is it because it’s easier to run to a store and buy what you want? Is it because we are a more disposable society? Or is it because kids just haven’t been taught? Well, at Robert Blue Middle School, it certainly isn’t because there’s a lack of interest, and thanks to a few ladies who are willing to volunteer their time and expertise, girls - and boys, are once again learning this lost craft.

The Robert Blue Middle School Sewing Club, averaging 30 to 45 members, got it’s start at the beginning of the this school year when some kids asked their teacher, Jenna Whipple, if they could form a sewing club. Whipple thought it was an interesting idea, but not really knowing a lot about sewing herself, enlisted the help of a few fellow employees.
