Schools come together for special education activities

Learning to put your best foot forward is something we all have to do. But while it can be nerve-wracking to figure out how to dress and act in different social and work situations, with some practice (and maybe a little help), anyone can learn how to present themselves well. So learned a group of special education students from the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Eagle Grove High School last week.

On January 9, six special education students from Eagle Grove High School came to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows to meet and work with some C-G-D students during an activity session geared toward learning good professionalism and self-care habits, and ultimately to help them eventually move into the workforce.

The session was led by MacKenzie Hawley, a work-based learning specialist with Iowa Central Community College who has a grant-funded position to do special education activities with C-G-D, Eagle Grove, Webster City, and one other school. She tries to spend one day a week in each district. However, last week was the first time two of the groups had done an activity together.

“Connecting with people from other schools—getting that relationship with not just their community, I think it’s great,” Hawley said. “This is the first, and it’s amazing so far,” said Sonia Vinsand, a para-educator at C-G-D. “It’s pretty awesome that we’re getting the opportunity to do this.”
