RBMS Veterans Day program

“We started this Veterans Day program about 16 or 18 years ago...because we didn’t think our students really understood the sacrifices our Veterans have made,” said Robert Blue Middle School Principal Scott Jeske during the ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11. From the posters on the walls, and the essays that were written about Veterans and what it means to be a hero, it’s obvious that not only do today’s students have an understanding, but they have a great appreciation for each and every Veteran - and their family members.

Robert Blue Middle School Teacher Sarah Groth had students in her class write essays about Veterans and who a hero is.  There were three that the staff thought were exceptionally well written, and the authors were invited to read them during the Veterans Day program.

In part of his essay, Zach Hogrefe said, “These heroes do extraordinary things while fighting people with the same powers as them.”  “They have a characteristic to help others before themselves.”  “They are fearless...the real heroes are the men and women with dog tags.  No masks and capes here.”

Adam Champaign wrote about having a cousin in the Army.  “That makes him a hero to me,” he said.

He went on to write “A hero must be caring...if they didn’t care they wouldn’t do something to change the world.”
