October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Beta Sigma Phi held their annual Fall Ritual on Monday, Oct. 21. While it was fun for the ladies to gather together and enjoy an evening out, they also focused on a very serious issue - one that affects an estimated 20 people every minute (according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence) - domestic violence. That adds up to more than 10 million people each year. Even more startling, four women across the nation are killed each day at the hands of an abuser.

Nicole Rethman of the local D/ SAOC center, their guest speaker for the evening, really made the statistics of abuse hit home. She brought with her a red silhouette, representing a victim of abuse. Standing next to it, Rethman read the story of Joni Manning, a 43- year-old mother of five children, who was beaten to death in Fort Dodge.
