New principal will greet students at EG Elementary next week

New Eagle Grove Elementary Principal Patricia Briggs has been in her new job since July 1, and has been busy in getting acquainted with staff, looking through the handbook and taking a tour to familiarize herself with the building. It will be a lot bigger building when school opens later in August, as work continues at a frantic pace to be ready on time.

“I’m excited to be here,” said Briggs, who is originally from Manchester, Iowa. “I’ve had contact with most everyone, and they’ve been very welcoming. I’m super impressed with everyone here, and the staff is excited to get the year started. It’s very evident that students come fi rst here, and they’re ready to embrace all students no matter where they are from.”

Briggs earned her BA in Elementary Education with a Reading Endorsement from the University of Dubuque, then received her MA in Education Leadership and Administrative license from Loras College. She taught in Houston, Texas for four years, then when their daughter was born the family moved to Iowa. She taught in the Starmont (Strawberry Point & Lamont) district for 18 years, spent four years working for Grant Wood AEA then went back to Starmont in a shared position with the Oelwein district. “I wore a lot of different hats,” said Briggs. “I had my degree in administration, and was increasing my preparation for that. Then I came here when this position opened.” She replaces Joe Erickson, who is now the superintendent at North Iowa Schools in Buffalo Center.

She admits that what attracted her was her liking of smaller school districts. “I applied where that seemed like a good fit,” said Briggs.
