New middle school club helping to bridge the communication gap

Robert Blue Middle School has been proactive in supporting clubs and activities that kids can get involved in after school. One of their newest clubs is not only giving students something to do, but it’s bringing students with different abilities together to learn from each other.

“I saw a need...so I volunteered,” said Jenine Casson of starting the RBMS Spanish Club.

Ironically, she doesn’t even speak Spanish, but she wasn’t going to let that stand in her way. She decided she was going to make this a club of leaders and learners, which meant she was going to let the members teach each other - she was just going to be the facilitator.

Casson, who works as a Para at the school, said she noticed a lot of Hispanic kids who were not able to communicate as easily with non-Spanish-speaking kids, and kids who only spoke English wanting to learn to speak Spanish so they could talk with classmates they couldn’t communicate well with because of language barriers.

Casson went to RBMS Principal Scott Jeske and expressed her interest in starting the Spanish Club. He thought it was a great idea.
