Money missing from EG Sports Boosters account

A criminal complaint was filed by the Eagle Grove Police Department on Thursday, Feb. 14 against Anna Morgan, accused of theft in the first degree.

Morgan was serving as the treasurer of the Eagle Grove Sports Boosters when President Travis Woodbeck was notified by the bank on January 17, 2019 of insufficient funds. Woodbeck said he went straight from the bank to law enforcement to report the incident. His next stop was in the office of Eagle Grove Area Schools Superintendent Jess Toliver.

“A substantial amount of money was gone,” commented Woodbeck.

According to the complaint on file at the Wright County attorney’s office, Morgan, while serving as the treasurer of the Eagle Grove Sports Boosters, allegedly withdrew cash and wrote checks to herself for personal use. The amount of cash taken was in excess of $10,000.

At the suggestion of law enforcement, Woodbeck made no further contacts about the incident while they investigated. Last week, Woodbeck held a meeting with Eagle Grove High School Athletic Director Richard Thacker, along with the high school coaches, to let them know what had happened and that it had been turned in to officials. He also reassured them that Morgan had been removed from the treasurer position and that new guidelines for deposits and withdrawals have been put into place. It will now take two signatures on both.

Morgan is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Thursday, Feb. 28.

“The Sports Boosters are committed to the students of the Eagle Grove Community School District and the community as a whole. Between the Sports Boosters and the school we have accomplished a lot of good, improving facilities and equipment for our student-athletes. While we are experiencing some challenging times, our commitment remains strong as we work to reestablish our organization and it’s mission. There are a lot of great people who have committed time and resources to this organization and it’s our duty as a Board to make sure we continue to move forward in a positive direction,” said Woodbeck. He added that while he knows it may be tough for some community members to give back their trust to their organization, he hopes they will remember all the good they do, like purchasing new uniforms for the athletic teams, purchasing new wrestling mats and giving a face-lift to the wrestling room...and so many more things.
