Long retires after four decades practicing law

Bill Long didn’t set out to make his living as a lawyer. In fact, he said he surprised many family and friends when he became one.

“I was not the type of person who people thought would become a lawyer,” he said with a little chuckle.

Truth be told, he even surprised himself a little, but once he graduated from Drake with a degree in business and started interviewing for jobs, he just knew it wasn’t the right fit for him. Having a few members of the family already practicing law, Long decided he would go back to law school.

After graduating, with one year of practicing under his belt in the Des Moines area, Long was doing some law research at the Drake library when he saw a note on the bulletin board. The City of Eagle Grove was searching for an attorney. Having been born and raised in Webster City, Long said he thought it would be nice to get back to the area. In 1972 he applied, interviewed, was offered, and accepted the job.
