Jim Lester named new Chief of Police for Washington, IA

There probably aren’t many people in Wright County who haven’t met, or at least heard of, Jim Lester. He is a 1985 graduate of Clarion High School and has also spent the last 33 years focusing his life on public safety for Wright County. Sadly, the community will have to bid him farewell and good life as he has excepted a position as chief of police in Washington, Iowa. As he heads off to a future of opportunity, it seems only right to take a look back at all he has done to keep us safe.

Lester began his career of public safety in Clarion as a reserve officer in 1986. A year later he took an EMT course through Mercy Hospital in Des Moines so he could join the Clarion ambulance service as well. In 1988, he joined the ranks of the Eagle Grove EMS Department and in February 1989 he was hired as Eagle Grove’s EMS director as well as a police officer.

In 1989, Lester graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy while working for Eagle Grove. In June of 1990, he was hired by the Clarion Police Department. By March 1992 he was appointed Deputy Sheriff. For the next 16 years, Lester served and protected the people of Wright County with great pride. But in 2008, he was again ready to take on more of a challenge.
