Iowa Capital Dispatch staff win awards for best video, news story, coverage of courts

Iowa Capital Dispatch staff won a half-dozen awards in the annual Iowa Newspaper Association Better Newspaper contest.

Senior reporter Jared Strong collected first-place awards for Best Video and Best News Story. Iowa Capital Dispatch was also awarded first place for Coverage of Courts and Crime for the work of Deputy Editor Clark Kauffman.

Editor-in-chief Kathie Obradovich won second place in the Master Columnist category. Iowa Capital Dispatch took third place for Coverage of Agriculture and Strong received third place for Best Continuing Coverage. The contest was judged by the Illinois Press Association.

Iowa Capital Dispatch was one of the first two digital members of the Iowa Newspaper Association, admitted in 2023. This was the first year Iowa Capital Dispatch was eligible to enter the newspaper contest and it was classified among the state’s largest newspapers.

Obradovich was elected a member of the INA Board of Directors at Thursday’s board meeting.

Iowa Capital Dispatch, which launched in January 2020, is part of States Newsroom, a national not-for-profit news organization with outlets in 39 states.
