Flooding problems for local residents

When the calendar turned to 2019, Mother Nature came in with a bang, bringing several snowstorms that left behind snowbanks several feet high. The rain that fell last week created an even worse situation as the precipitation on top of the rapid melting snow created a flooding situation. Towns throughout Iowa and the Midwest were affected.

In Wright County alone, more than 50 miles of rural roadways were underwater by Thursday, March 14, and that number kept rising. These flooded roads included rural gravel roads, Highway 3 and others, and even streets in Eagle Grove. Nickellane Ave resident Ray Mead was especially nervous about the rising water that closed off NW 6th St. and was quickly approaching his home on the corner of NW 6th St. and Nickellane.

“I’ve lived here 50 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Mead on Friday, March 15. “I’ve seen three feet of snow melt in the last 72 hours.”

Mead, afraid of losing his house to flooding, contacted Eagle Grove Administrator Bryce Davis with his concern. Mead said he was pleased with the response he got as Davis immediately got in the car with him to drive out and personally take a look at the flooding situation in that part of town.
