Eagles win over West Hancock, C. Springs to open season

If there opening week is any indication, the Eagle Grove varsity boys basketball team will likely be a force to be reckoned with this season so opponents need to be ready on any given night. Two teams this year have already found that out.

They traveled to Forest City last Tuesday to open the schedule, losing to a fine Indian team 65-39. The home team was up 28-18 at halftime, and extended that lead by eight more to start the final period. Spencer Espejo and Niko Padilla shared the lead in the scoring column with 11 points apiece, and each sank three treys for the night. Ryan Smith was close, making nine points with a nice 3 of 4 at the line. Enzo Gebara, Chase Blasi, Jake Darland and Austin Hill all chipped in two points apiece.

Hill led the rebound column with eight, followed by Blasi with six and Padilla with five. Smith and John Mosley grabbed four caroms each, with Espejo getting his hands on three. Gebara, Nick Halverson, Darland and Ben Nessa all had one each for the night. Gebara, Padilla and Smith all had two assists each and Espejo one. Gebara and Padilla picked off two steals apiece and Espejo one. Blasi made three blocked shots and Espejo one.
