Eagles score an exciting 47-46 district win over Broncos

Within a span of just four days, the Eagle Grove boys varsity basketball team was able to find a way to see their season continue at the start of that span and then see it come to an end as well. That is life at tournament time in Iowa. The Eagles trailed Belmond-Klemme 21-17 at halftime in their opening round district contest on Monday in Clarion, but then found a way to whittle away the lead in the fourth quarter in outscoring the Broncos 18 points to nine for a thrilling 47-46 win that sent the B-K fans home stunned.

Spencer Espejo netted 13 points and Ryan Smith 12 points, with both getting one trey each. Niko Padilla was close with nine points, including two buckets from downtown. Colin Omvig and Chase Blasi both finished with three points each and Sam Johnson added two points.

Espejo and Smith tied at seven rebounds each, with Padilla making five and Blasi four. Omvig grabbed three caroms, John Mosley two and both Johnson and Austin Hill one each. Espejo and Omvig dished the ball for two assists each, with Smith, Padilla and Blasi all credited with one each. Espejo and Smith came up with four steals each, with Padilla and Omvig getting one apiece.
