Eagle XC takes ninth at Gilbert

The Eagle Grove girls The Eagle Grove boys cross country team began the new season by taking ninth out of 13 complete teams at a meet hosted by Gilbert last Thursday and held at the Iowa State University campus.

Madrid showed they have a strong team again this year in taking the title with 36 points, followed in the top five by South Hamilton at 69, Earlham at 87, Adair Casey/Guthrie Center at 116 and Des Moines Christian at 130.

“It was nice to get the first meet out of the way,” stated head coach Ben Demuth. “The guys were ready to compete. We’re a little unknown as a team this year. We have decent numbers, but don’t know who’s running where. They have put themselves in a position that could make us competitive. It was a loaded class, with seven of the teams ranked in 1A. Pella and us were the only 2A schools. We finished about where I thought going in. There was also a lot of good individual runners, with some real solid kids ahead of us. Madrid is a strong team, and all their guys medaled. A good thing about this meet is that everyone runs varsity. I think our depth will hold true for us this year.”
