Eagle wrestling team second at conference tourney

The Eagle Grove wrestling team had a great day at the Top of Iowa Tournament last Saturday in Forest City, crowning two champions on their way to a second place finish behind powerful Lake Mills. The Bulldogs finished with 221 points, followed by the Eagles at 158.5 points. Completing the top five were North Butler at 154.5, Osage at 144.5 and Central Springs at 135.

Mark Dawson (132) and Saxon Lyman (152) took gold medals for the Eagles. Dawson used a fall and technical fall to move into the finals, where he then took a 5-3 overtime win over Hanson of Lake Mills. Saxon won by fall and a 7-2 decision to reach the finals, then took a 14-4 major decision over Shaw of Garner-Hayfield/ Ventura to wrap up his bracket win.

Derek Graham (113), Dawson Lalor (138) and Joel Mendoza (220) all finished runners-up, with Brayden Lyman (170) third, to help pile up the team points. Graham took three straight decisions for his day, Lalor had a fall in 5:26 as part of his, Mendoza a fall in 1:38 and an 8-6 overtime win and Lyman a 16-4 major decision to push them along.

Individual season records going into this Saturday’s sectional are as follows: Jacob Graham 30-17; Derek Graham 33-5; Gabe Rolon 27-24; Mark Dawson 27-9; Dawson Lalor 31- 16; Evan Anderson 17-20; Saxon Lyman 39-7; Brayden Lyman 41-8; Dylan Kruckenberg 25- 23; Joel Mendoza 29-5 and Leo Calles 11-16.
