Eagle wrestling team qualifies for regional duals

Considering that a powerful Lake Mills team was hosting the day, the Eagle Grove wrestling team still came out doing as well as could be expected at the Class 1A sectional last Saturday. The Bulldogs won with 241 points, followed by the Eagles with 196 points. By the time you read this, they will have wrestled in the regional dual at Lake Mills (read about that in next week’s Eagle). The rest of the teams finished like this: Newman Catholic 159, West Hancock 133, Belmond-Klemme 95, West Fork 72, St. Edmond 31.

Moving on to the district round this Saturday at Manson will be champions Derek Graham (113), Mark Dawson (132), Saxon Lyman (152) and Joel Mendoza (220). Joining them will be runners-up Gabe Rolon (120), Dawson Lalor (138) and Brayden Lyman (170).

Graham won his finals match by forfeit over Jones (L.Mills), while Dawson took a 5-0 win over Hanson (L.Mills). Saxon won an 8-3 match over Love (L.Mills) for the title, with Mendoza taking a 5-3 overtime win over Johnson (L.Mills). Rolon lost to Helgeson (L.Mills) in his title match, but had already beaten Hansen (Newman) so there was no need for a wrestleback as Rolon automatically advances. Lalor lost by fall to Beery (L.Mills), but had already defeated Gribben (Newman) so he avoided the wrestleback. Brayden lost to Mccleish (Newman), but had already beaten Bergo (L.Mills) so no wrestleback match for him either.

Seeing their season end with a third place finish were Jacob Graham (106) and Evan Anderson (145).

“This is the first time since the 90’s we’ve had seven advancing to districts, and 2010 was the last time we qualified as a team for regional duals,” stated head coach Jake Groth.
