Eagle wrestlers compete at Winterset

The Eagle wrestlers traveled to Winterset last Saturday for the Gary Christensen Invitational. Waukee took the title with 242 points, followed in the top five of the 17-team tournament by Interstate 35 (Truro) with 198.5, Winterset with 133, Osage with 124 and Van Meter with 122. The Eagles were eighth.

Joel Mendoza (220) captured the lone gold medal for the team, using a fall and 11-9 decision to move into the finals where he took a 10-8 win over Morrison of Waukee. There were no second place finishers, but Brayden Lyman (170) did take third in his bracket. After losing his quarterfinal match, he came through the back side of the bracket with an 11-3 major decision and two falls to grab a bronze finish.

The team wrestles at Forest City this Thursday, then goes to the Perry Tournament on Saturday.
