Eagle Grove city crew takes on Jack Frost

With spring still three weeks away, or at least officially, the City of Eagle Grove public works crew has been quite busy lately with moving a large amount of snow from four recent storms that came fairly close together. With more likely on the way, and considering how last April went with snow not giving up the fight, they will continue to do the job of moving it for as long as it takes.

According to Robert Lunda, the city has saw at least a five-inch snowfall from the two snowstorms before this past weekend’s big one hit. Sunday’s blizzard left roughly 10” in its aftermath according to Carl Steil from the Eagle Grove Street Department. The good news is, they just recently had two truckloads of sand delivered, so they had a good supply of material on hand. He said that after getting the equipment ready prior to the start of winter, they also make sure everything is ready when a snow event is eminent.

“We also make the decision of when we’re coming in (to clear snow), and I’m the fortunate fellow to set my alarm for 1 a.m.,” said Lunda. “I look around the area and might even take a drive. We’re normally here (at the city shop) by 2 to 4 a.m. The timing of the snow is another thing. It’s easier to do the plowing while it’s still dark.”

This past weekend’s snowstorm saw some crew members working up to 15 hour days to get things cleaned up.
