Council sets public hearing to rezone former school lot

Following a brief presentation from Bob Torkelson of Torkelson Construction, the Eagle Grove City Council set a public hearing for the September 19 meeting at which time they will consider a rezoning of the former Lela Howland school property at Jackson Avenue and Second Street. The request would be from the current R-3 to R-4, which is multi-residential.

The Planning & Zoning Commission has already approved the recommendation to proceed. According to Torkelson, there would be a total of three four-plex units consisting of two and three bedroom apartments. They would be single story buildings, with no steps and fully ADA compliant. “I hope to break ground in October and have the first one open by April of next year,” said Torkelson. “The other two would then be open by November of 2017.”

The Council also approved an assignment of interest in an option to purchase real property, which is Lot 1, Block 38 of Cadwell’s First Edition to Eagle Grove Junction. According to Attorney Brett Legvold, legal counsel for the City, this document is between the City and the CDC to allow them to purchase the property for future development.
