Council awards contract for street improvement project

Following City Council action this past Monday, Fort Dodge Asphalt Company was awarded the contract for the 2020 street improvement project. Their winning bid was $258,258.53, which was considerably under the engineers estimate of $306,000. The only other bidder was Heartland Asphalt for $354,702.70. “All their bid documents are in line,” stated City Administrator Bryce Davis. “They have done work for the city before.”

A public hearing focused on the maximum property tax dollars for the proposed FY21 budget. The total maximum levy for affected property tax levies is set at $14.82302 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. It represents greater than 102 percent of the maximum property tax dollars requested in the current budget. With no objections at the hearing, a motion was made and seconded to approve the resolution and the motion carried.

The Council reviewed and discussed a request for proposals for asbestos sampling and testing services. The proposed project will pull samples from anywhere from 10-13 downtown building facades to test them for asbestos. In addition, the consultant will assist the City and the grant administrator to develop plans and specs for the safe removal of the asbestos-containing materials. The City has a target date of May 29 of this year to get that removal work completed.
