Airport improvements may take flight this spring

Although the Eagle Grove airport isn’t a major travel hub, it does get used more than most people realize. According to City Administrator Bryce Davis, the airport does serve some small business planes for commercial use, but it’s mostly used by private pilates and want-to-be-pilots.

“We have a lot of touch-and-goes where people are practicing,” Davis noted. “These private pilots also rent hangar space at the airport, further utilizing the facility. Unfortunately, this aging airport is getting harder for these pilots to use for a number of reasons, but Davis is hoping some available grants will help rectify the situation sooner rather than later.

In the summer of 2017, it was estimated that roughly only 50 percent of the runway lights worked. A motor problem also caused the beacon to go out. Davis and the City of Eagle Grove knows these repairs are necessary for safety reasons, but winter weather and frozen ground have prevented them from getting to the infrastructures to complete work. With temperatures finally warming up, Davis is hoping these problems can soon be addressed. The plan is to collect bids from contractors this spring for running lights, taxi lights, and a beacon. He added that they will also need to use Geo locators to see if any underground wires have been destroyed from decades of the freeze/ thaw cycle, cutting, or being chewed on by animals.
