10th Annual Aaron Eilerts Day next Friday

Ten years ago, an amazing tradition came out of a terrible tragedy. A community came together to deal with the loss of a 14-year-old student...friend... Boy Scout...and an overall person of exemplar character - Aaron Eilerts.

It was during a tornado at Little Sioux Boy Scout Ranch in June of 2008 that Aaron lost his life. Serving as a Scout leader, his last act was helping others, ultimately saving many lives before loosing his own.

In February 2009, Governor Chet Culver proclaimed Feb. 24 (Eilerts’ birthday) as the Aaron Eilerts Day of Service and Giving. Only three people in the history of Iowa have had a day named after them, and a young boy from Eagle Grove is one of them.

The students and staff of Robert Blue Middle School (RBMS) are proud to say they have celebrated the Aaron Eilerts Day of Service and Giving each year since, on or around February 24. Joining them has been numerous community members and high school volunteers to complete a variety of project that encourage everyone to find the joy in giving to others like Aaron did.
