A “wheely” good look at career opportunities

The wheels on the bus may go round and round, but so do the wheels on a police car, a tractor, a plow, cable installers, a book mobile, campus secrurity vehicles, National Guard vehicles...and so many other things. Now, what do these things all have in common besides wheels? They all provide career opportunities for today’s youth - some that they might not have ever thought of if not for this day.

Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge sponsored a Career on Wheels Day last Thursday, May 2, to remind area middle school students that you’re never too young to start thinking about what you want to be when you grow up. Hundreds of students from Eagle Grove (sixth graders), the Fort Dodge Middle School, St. Ed’s, and Gilmore City gathered at the ICCC East Campus to explore the jobs of more than two dozen careers on wheels.

There was an electrician, Mid American Energy, State troopers, Emergency Medical Technicians, Misty Harbor, and more. Kids had the opportunity to listen to representatives of the companies speak about their first-hand experiences working in that career field, ask questions, and in some cases, even try sitting behind the driver seat of some of the vehicles. Several found careers that interested them.

Gracie Severson said after listening to the EMT, she would maybe consider being a nurse or part of the ambulance crew. Rafer Russell said he was most excited about the time he spent learning about the opportunities of the National Guard.
