A “Thank You” from 1936

Nearly 60 years after the Eagle Grove Fire Department helped put out a fire at a church in Clarion, they were commended for their assistance and presented with a special memorial.

Judge Newt Draheim was only seven years old when he stood across the street watching the United Church of Christ Congregational in Clarion go up in flames on August 17, 1936. According to Warren Clausen, chairman of the Board of Trustees for the church, the Clarion Fire Department had responded, but their pump truck broke down, so they called in Eagle Grove for back up.

Draheim never forgot how their neighboring town’s fire department helped save the large stained window of Jesus Christ in the church, and it was his mission to one day thank them appropriately.
